France has long been viewed as one of the best ski destinations in the world, with a wide range and huge number of world-class resorts that cater to a range of abilities, interests and budgets. Here are five of these excellent resorts:
This staple of Alpine skiing has some of the best eating of any of the French resorts, with a range of fine restaurants and super après ski options. There are many classy and unusual hotels which range from the super traditional to the futuristic. Val Thorens is also home to Europe’s highest ski hotel, Koh-i-Nor, which is brand spanking new, with all mod cons.
Often held up as the best of the best of Alpine skiing, and so often subject to claims of excessive hype, Chamonix may be busy but with the sheer range and quality of the skiing on offer, it is easy to see why. There really is a wealth of perfect powder on the sunny slopes and Chamonix’s steep gradients and challenging on and off piste options are perfect for adventurous skiers.
On the slopes, the skiing is wide ranging and varied, as you would expect from a ski resort which is part of the largest ski area in the world – the three valleys. Off the slope, Courchevel offers one of the most glitzy and glamorous après ski scenes in Europe. There are a range of high-class hotels and chic nightclubs and bars, and designer shops usually only seen in the fashion capitals of the world. Wear you finest ski apparel and settle down for a chic cocktail in one of the darling wine bars.
Think you might have missed the best of the season by the time you get yourself organised? Tignes, sitting between 2100m and 3500m, has an incredible nine months of skiing each year – guaranteed snow. There are over 300km of practically perfect pistes, and off-piste skiing to die for (not literally!). This is a sporting centre, and also offers ice diving, ice climbing, and various other indoor and outdoor winter sports and adrenaline pumping activities. There is a swimming pool, and a brand new altitude training centre.
This could just be the perfect family ski location – a place to bring the kids along for pretty high chance of excellent snow conditions. Unusually, there are easy beginner’s green runs all the way down from the very top of the mountain back to the village, meaning that the whole family can stick together for a full day of skiing without adults getting bored on the baby slopes. Plus, the whole family gets to admire the views from the heights. The perfect family bonding experience.
Wherever you go in France on your skiing holiday, you are sure to encounter the very best in ski terrain, snow, and of course après ski wining and dining. So why not book your ski holiday to France and be whisked off for the ski vacation of your dreams?
